A field guide to a defensible number

Every number
can be traced.

A figure in your report is only the surface. Beneath it lies a trail of shipments, assumptions, calculations and source records. EcoSphere makes the whole story legible.

One figure, all the way down

Pick any figure.
Follow it to the paper it stands on.

Imagine you are preparing a sustainability review. Someone points to one number and asks, “What exactly is underneath it?” Follow this fictional FY2026 entry from the published figure all the way to the carrier document. Each stop answers a different question.

THE CLAIM / A NUMBER WITHOUT ITS TRAIL

Most sustainability reports stop here: a total, a category, a year-on-year change. Nobody reading it can tell how deep it goes.

THE REGISTER / 1,946 INDIVIDUAL MOVEMENTS

12,840.6 tonnes is the sum of 1,946 individual shipments. Each one is a row you can open. We’ll follow a single container crossing from Rotterdam.

THE WORKBENCH / CHANGE THE DISTANCE BASIS

No black box. Three inputs, one multiplication, and every input is itself a layer you can open. Try changing how the distance is measured.

The factor, and which version

THE CATALOGUE / A VALUE FROZEN IN TIME

Factors get revised. If last year’s figure quietly changes because a library updated, nobody can trust the trend line. So each factor is pinned to the year it was used.

THE RECONCILIATION / ACCOUNTING MEETS CLIMATE

The weight and route come from a structured record, matched to the purchase order finance already closed. Sustainability and finance are looking at the same transaction.

THE ORIGIN / THE SOURCE CANNOT BE IMPLIED

The bill of lading itself, exactly as the carrier issued it. Its fingerprint is recorded, so any later edit is visible. And when someone made a mistake, the correction is kept, not overwritten.

SOURCE FOUND CHAIN PRESERVED

We began with 12,840.6 tonnes. We reached a document. Every other figure deserves the same honesty—even when the trail stops at an estimate.

See where each figure stops

The evidence mix

Measured or estimated. Labelled either way.

Perfect primary data was never realistic for purchased goods or a long haulage tail. A figure you can explain is. So every category shows exactly how much of it rests on measured data and how much on estimates.

Why this matters now: after the 2026 Omnibus changes, CSRD covers fewer, larger companies, assurance stays at the limited level, and smaller suppliers may decline detailed data requests. Check your own position with your advisers.

Who reads the trail

One trail, read three ways.

Head of sustainability

Answers the question without opening a spreadsheet.

They ask
“Where did this number come from?”
They get
The five layers under it, and which ones are estimates.

Group controller

Reconciles emissions to transactions already closed.

They ask
“Does this tie back to our books?”
They get
Each record matched to its purchase order and approved invoice.

Assurance provider

Samples any figure and follows it in the order they test.

They ask
“Show me the source for this line.”
They get
The document, its fingerprint and every change made to it.

Where we draw the line

What EcoSphere won’t do.

  • Call an estimate a measurement.

Spend-based figures are legitimate and often unavoidable. They’re labelled as estimates everywhere they appear, including the export.

  • Overwrite a correction.

Mistakes happen in keying, in units, in factors. Each fix is added on top of the original, with who made it and why.

  • Promise you an assurance opinion.

Software can organise evidence. Only your assurance provider can give an opinion on it, and we never imply otherwise.

A first trace

Start with your hardest number.

Pick the figure that worries you most and where its data lives today. You’ll get a sketch of how deep it currently goes and three steps to take it further.
